Ford Is Chasing the Real EV Breakthrough: Affordability

A new video from Ford Motor Company is worth watching. It offers a rare look inside the engineering effort behind the company’s next generation of electric vehicles.

Ford’s new Universal EV platform focuses on one goal: making EVs dramatically cheaper to build. Engineers redesigned the vehicle from the ground up, reducing battery size, improving aerodynamics, cutting weight, and simplifying manufacturing. The result is a systems approach aimed at delivering more range and performance with less battery and lower cost.

Much of this work has taken place in Ford’s California labs. The vehicles built on this platform are expected to enter production in Kentucky starting next year. Ford plans to launch both a small pickup and a family SUV priced roughly in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, while still being profitable. That has been one of the biggest challenges for the EV industry.

If Ford succeeds, it could mark a turning point. Affordable American-designed EVs that can compete globally, including with the rapidly advancing vehicles coming from China.
