Multifamily Charging
Unlocking EV Access for Millions of Californians

In the News: POLITICO:
Why Apartments Are the Next EV Frontier
EVs for All America’s research on multifamily charging was featured in POLITICO’s California Climate newsletter, highlighting how apartment dwellers could unlock the next major wave of EV adoption.
Nearly one-third of Americans — 110 million people — live in apartments and condos. Yet the nation’s EV charging system was built for single-family homes. In California alone, 7.5 million residents of multifamily buildings are being left behind in the electric vehicle transition — a population larger than 30 U.S. states.
Our new report, The Multifamily EV Charging Pinch Point: California at the Forefront, reveals how solving this barrier could unlock the next wave of EV adoption — and create tens of thousands of new clean energy jobs.
Key Findings
- 80% of apartment renters lack access to EV chargers where they live.
- 70% of renters and 65% of condo owners say they’d be more likely to buy an EV if their building had reliable overnight charging.
- Most residents are willing to pay up to $50/month for a Level 2 charger in their parking space.
- Two-thirds of EV owners enjoy the convenience and savings of home charging — almost none live in apartments.
Why It Matters
Affordable EVs are arriving — with new sub-$40,000 models from Nissan, Chevy, and Ford expected by 2027. But without convenient home charging, millions of Californians will be locked out of the EV market, and the state risks missing its climate and equity goals.
Our research highlights a practical, cost-effective model to fix the problem:
✅ Tenants save money with cheaper charging at home
✅ Building owners gain new income without major capital costs
✅ Taxpayers see a better return on investment — 250 apartment chargers can be installed for the cost of one fast-charging station
California Can Lead
With one-third of America’s EVs already on its roads, California is positioned to pioneer a statewide solution for multifamily charging — and ensure every renter can go electric.
